Berries and Cream Starburst...Advertisement or Proof of Postmodernism?

This commercial is solid evidence that advertisers no longer care about reporting the merits of a given product or service. Instead, commercials serve to create spectacle and leave the viewer utterly confused. Not only does this commercial not make me want to run out and try Berries and Cream Starburst, it makes me wonder why advertisers even bother at all anymore. This is just one example of an increased emphasis on visual and auditory stimulation for no other purpose than shock value or brief entertainment. I suppose the repetition aspect might be effective, but only enough to make people remember how annoying the commercial is. Will people be talking about this commercial for a while? Sure. Will Starburst's sales increase? That remains to be seen, but my guess is no.

I submit to you: entertainment is paramount when it pertains to a television commercial. Granted, this particular commercial is of dubious entertainment value (based on individual sense of humor, yet it is memorable. After all, what possible benefits could Starburst hope to offer the consumer?
Although, I would like to see a Starburst commercial that has the catchphrase: "It's just flavored wax!".

I was linked to your blog via the Anonymous Message Server. Thank you.
I just wanted to share that my friends love acting out the little song in this commercial. Frankly, their interpretations were much more entertaining than the original, and until I stumbled upon this video, I didn't even know that it had to do with Starbursts... So, you're point holds true, I suppose.

I agree with your post. This commercial is intriguing, I never thought I'd see the day that advertisers would employ such random humor...and I love it. I'll never try Berries and Cream Starburst, but that character is upsetting & amazing at the same time.

I love the commercial, but I did not know it was for Starburst! I thought is was for Skittles. They should have put the world 'Starburst' in the jingle.

Look man. We all know what Starburst are, we all have a general idea of what berries and/or cream taste like. How much description of this do you need? You also need to think of what they're doing; not trying to impress you with statistics. People buy things for the image, that's what brand loyalty is. If you hear that stupid song a few times, its stuck in your head, then you think "hm. Maybe I should try those, just to see." Then the seed is planted, the ad worked. Stop using big words to explain a silly commercial, makes you sound pretentious.

Myself and my friends absolutely LOVE this ad. Whenever we meet up we joke and mock it numerous times. Please check out one of my friends mocking it on youtube:
